Local Adventures

If you can bring yourself to leave the cosy retreat of Crowdy Hall, the rest of County Durham awaits…

Durham Heritage Coast

Beaches

Though secluded and surrounded by nature, there’s plenty of lively places and lovely local spots to choose from if you want to venture further. County Durham boasts numerous beautiful sandy stretches: Crimdon Dene & the picturesque Blackhall Rocks Beach (amongst others) offer endless undisturbed coastline and caves to explore.

For those after a city vibe, the City of Durham, situated a 25 min drive away, is famous for being the charming backdrop to the Harry Potter films and Durham Cathedral, amongst the first three sites globally to gain UNESCO World Heritage status). A little further afield is the Newcastle, renowned for its industrial heritage, iconic architecture and popular nightlife.

Walks & Cycling

Crowdy Hall is close to several popular cycling and walking routes. Immerse yourself in nature and take in an array of scenic loops either on a bike or on foot. Keen cyclists have options that include road routes and trails.

Swimmer

Wild Swimming

Cold water immersion is no longer a niche pastime and in keeping with the spirit of connecting with nature, unwinding and digital detoxing, we recommend going for a dip in the sea along the Durham Heritage coastline!

For somewhere closer, try the swimming and watersports lake at North East Wake Park, just round the corner from Crowdy Hall.

Wake boarding

Boat Trip

There’s plenty of local choices just 5-15 mins drive away. Fancy a stroll around nearby Hardwick Park? Or get active with wakeboarding, paddleboarding, or swimming at North East Wake Park. Try Falconry at Durham Falconry or Golf at Knotty Hill Golf Centre.

There’s also a farmers market in the nearest village of Sedgefield held on the first Sunday of each month. There are plenty of local options regardless of the weather.

Sedgefield Church

Historical Sedgefield

In the centre of Sedgefield village, there is an ancient custom of a yearly football match between the agricultural labourers and the artisans of the town, the football being provided by the parish clerk.

The game is still played on Shrove Tuesday. The ‘bull ring,’ through which the ball has to be passed three times by the sexton before being thrown to the players, is at the end of the green. The goals are called ‘alleying places’ and are about a quarter of a mile apart. If the ball is not ‘alleyed’ by six o’clock it becomes the property of the sexton.
